There are increasing concerns and awareness of the effects of mercury fillings on general health.

Dental amalgam is an amalgamation of metals, consisting of liquid mercury and a powdered alloy composed of silver, tin, zinc, indium or palladium and copper. Approximately 50% of dental amalgam is elemental mercury by weight.

In the UK the Department of Health issued a warning in 1998 potential effects of dental amalgam fillings on pregnant women and their developing fetuses, and on children under the age of 6, including breastfed infants. This was probably linked with the research carried out in 1990’s by Professor Vimy in Canada, showing that mercury crossed the placenta and was deposited into the major organs namely kidneys, liver and brains in sheep and chimpanzee. He and co workers also showed that the mercury was expressed in milk fed to their young.

Some individuals have an allergy or sensitivity to mercury or the other components of dental amalgam (such as silver, copper, or tin). Dental amalgam might cause these individuals to develop oral lesions and is possibly associated with other autoimmune conditions such as multiple sclerosis, lupus, thyroiditis and eczema.

Here at the Carnaby Street, Centre Point and Kings Cross Dental care is taken in the safe removal of amalgam filled tooth. Protocols and guidelines set by the British society of mercury free dentistry and the IAOMT which we are a member of are followed and adhered to.

Examples of some of their recommendations are:

  1. The use of rubber dam to isolate tooth/teeth being worked on.
  2. The use of a separate oxygen supply.
  3. High powered suction with amalgam separation unit to collect waste amalgam.
  4. Air filtration system.
  5. Nutritional support before, during and after amalgam removal.
  6. To get dental materials tested for compatibility (if a patient prefers).

The composite resin material that we use does not contain Bisphenol A which is a carbon based synthetic compound and belongs to the group of diphenylmethane.

An information pack is available upon request and further information on the effects of mercury fillings can be found at www.iaomt.org or www.mercurymadness.org.
